Often age kills Vulcans long before mileage does. Metal corrodes, rubber rots, etc. No manufacturer can really correct those things. Certain models of the 1500 had a plastic oil gear that was prone to failure. The Vulcan 750, though beloved by it's owners, is a basket case of common problems. The '06 and '07 900's had an issue with the stator.

I fill the oil filter full, roll it in my hands, tipping it sideways as I do this while the oil is absorbed into the filter element, then fill it again about 2/3 of the way. Every once in a while the lights stay on for a bit with my 800, but a rev of the engine and they go out.Bandit101. If the 100 ohm resister at the ignition switch was bad or removed, it still would not prevent power from going to the ignition and lights. It just reduces voltage to the igniter to turn it on. I picked up a 2000 VN800 about 2 weeks ago. I've started the bobber conversion. Doesn't looks like a lot has changed but another 2-3 weeks and it should have most of the changes done except paint. So far i've installed new forward controls and lowered the bike 3 inches with the Scootworks kit. 5.
The starter run on could be caused by bad solenoid, starter switch/kill switch holding the connection, bad starter circuit relay in the junction box, or bad starter relay. Of course, cannot totally rule out a wiring issue. Would take apart the kill and starter switch and clean contacts. You should find a knurled ring at the base of the choke knob (the holder I guess is the word) which may be covered by a rubber cover. It goes like this, the battery has sufficient charge to energize the starter solenoid, but once the solenoid contacts close and power is supplied to the motor, voltage to the solenoid drops and the contacts open, removing power to the motor.
